Does this printer use IP or Appletalk. If it's Appletalk, he'll need to make sure that the router supports it.
Besides the Apple Base Station the list is pretty short.

As others have mentioned, go with the Router. The only thing missing
with
the equation is a converter from your Ethernet cable to the LocalTalk
connector. I use a Fallon Ethernet-to-LocalTalk converter on my 1996 HP
6MP
LaserPrinter under AppleTalk, and as others have mentioned with similar
systems have had no problems.
