uninstall itimmediately. Apple has gone so far as to release a "Norton
 Shell Removal" tool to us.

Thank you, Kyle. I have searched various combinations of "Norton Shell
Removal" and "Norton Virus" on the apple download website, and found
nothing. Assistance would be helpful in finding this for OS9.1.

Problems are something I don't have much of. Can you describe what the
Norton Anti-Virus could be doing?

I also have installed Norton Systemworks, which I bought as a special for
$10 after a recommendation from persons on another listserv. I use Disc
Doctor from time to time, and it finds minor problems sometimes, always the
same ones. Will the Shell Removal software also remove, or affect, the
other parts of the Systemworks suite? Should I find out how to uninstall
this, too, in favor of another maintenance utility?

I don't have real specific info. for you but here goes, some from fuzzy memory:

First of all, the biggest problem with Norton is it becomes too invasive in your system and starts doing things with files you don't want it to do. It also prevents you from doing things you want to do in the form of conflicts, error messages and computer lock ups. An invisible file in System Saver was causing problems and took me hours of troubleshooting to fix the issue.

I had this experience a few years ago running 8.6 with Norton System Works 1.0 and ended up doing a complete clean OS install. Having said that, some Mac users claim to never have had problems, so YMMV.

As far as Norton Antivirus, again many people say they like it. But, I've heard depending on the settings, it can be more of a hindrance by stopping you from opening harmless files and making you wait while it checks them because it thinks everything is a virus! Especially annoying if it's a file you have opened before. All that and the chances of ever finding a virus is extremely minimal. If you have it set to not auto-check for viruses this shouldn't be a problem, but then you aren't getting the true protection for that one in a million chance. That's why a lot of Mac users don't see the point of having it installed.

Bottom line is it may work fine for you. Then again others have had problems....

My disk came with an uninstaller to remove the software. Click on the installer and see if that is an option. If it is you need to boot from the install CD to perform the uninstall. Don't know how complete this works or where Kyle's "Norton Shell Removal" (that nobody else but a few technicians can use!) comes into necessity. Maybe that's OS X only?
