------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------Hi Brian
One viable answer for OS 9.x is Pro Tools Free (5.01) downloadable from the
Digidesign site, PLUS their own propriety MP3 conversion plug-in, which
costs less than $20.00. There is one for ProTools Free called "MP3 Export",
not to be confused with the "MP3 Option" which is for ProTools LE 5.x.
Here is the link at the DigiStore:

Right at the top of the list is what you are looking for.
Installed, it gives you the added bounce-to-disk selection that takes your
mixed-down PT session and converts it to MP3 right then and there (done in
real-time of course, as the dithering demands are pretty intense).
Of used it a couple of times with quite satisfactory results, no file size
too large. Bit depth options are included in the plug-in.
Hope this helps.

I've been doing sound file things again, I've not done this since going
to OS X.
I have a bunch of pretty big AIFF files (some made with WireTap without
compression, other left over from a digitizing LP project. Anyway some
are say 250 meg/30 min of AIFF (I didn't think to downgrade the default
prefs in WireTap.. :/ ) others are more reasonable.
I'd like to turn these into MP3 for use in my car. Looking on MacUpdate I only really see one OS 9 app (Mpegger, etc) mentioned, other than SoundConvertor (for X) which has some mixed reviews.
Buried in a box I have Toast with Jam (from OS 9.1); would I be better off digging that up and running it under Classic? I don't do this enough at this time to justify the $80 for Jam 6? (X) or Toast + Jam (for X) for $170 or whatever. Just a couple files once in a while, sometimes moving a sound file from one format to another for a lecture (although Authorware is a lot better about Quicktime, now, so I think I'll have to do that less often).
Anyway, OS X software recommendations are welcome (AIFF to MP3 and light editing (cut silence out, maybe here and there once in a while). No real pop/hiss editing needed.
It's been so long since I've done this, that I can't really recall what
Jam 5(or so) was capable of- should I just try that under Classic?
Thanks,
Brian
