Hi all;

OK, I took the plunge, I got an OWC Mercury firewire/USB drive. The 1.4 gig of stuff on it copied to my internal drive in under a minute. Nice. Hope the case holds out, and my comments a month ago about earlier experiences with OWC generic SCSI cases doesn't come back to haunt me :)

I'm using 10.2.8, and OS X Disk Utility does not have an option to format a volume as a DOS format drive anymore, just 2 flavors of MacOS, and Unix. If I reboot into 9.2, will I be able to format in a PC format from there? OR would I have to put it on a 9.1 machine? And then I recall Drive Setup (9.1) used to have more options than present in the 10.28. The problem with that, I don't have a 9.1 machine that supports USB or firewire.

Included OWC docs say to buy MacDrive, to let a PC read MacOS formatted volumes. Which seems to be avoiding the simplest solution (make it and keep it PC formatted), unless there's a reason it's not that simple... I would rather not have to keep a copy of MacDrive around and install it on PCs everywhere I go...

Recall I asked a couple of months ago about formatting the drive on my wife's laptop (XP/firewire), and then trying to read it on the OS X machine. Consensus was it should be OK, and that should still be true, right? Figures she left her laptop at the univ. today :/

My goals are:

1) To have a big partition to use for backing up photos, music, and misc that would be readable by both OS X, and any Windows machine with firewire or USB. I want to be able to haul this thing around on occasion, and use it wherever I end up (likely with a Windows box via USB since USB is common and most people I visit have Windows machines).

2) to have a second partition of whatever format to use to back up my NetBSD server using rsync across my LAN. Any thoughts on this would be welcome (it should work pretty readily, I have sshd working fine on the NetBSD box).

Thoughts about either of these goals are most welcome!

Thanks,

Brian
