Thoughts about either of these goals are most welcome!
OK, I found some replies that I had missed when I asked this before, in July.
Especially useful is this reply from Bruce, with Dan K involved too:
(thanks guys. I'm off to campus shortly to get the laptop with Firewire so as to set it up as Fat32...there have to be limitations (filename issues? comments lost? something...) but I'll see what I find.

Hey, me too, me too!! :-) I had been waiting to read responses to Brian's
first post but since no-one had any positive advice I since forgot about
it.
I've got a 2.5" drive formatted in NTFS in an Oxford-911-based external
case which I've used on my Win2K PC. Attaching it to my OS 9 desktop Mac
prompted a friendly offer to initialize which I naturally declined.
OS 10.3.4 reads from it fine, but won't let me write to the disk. Is there any way to write to an NTFS disk under any Mac OS?
No.
Is there any way
at all to use NTFS disks under OS 9? Could I write to fat32 disks under
both OS 9 or X?
Yes.
Must a drive be formatted as fat32 so both (three really! :-) platforms
can use it fully?
Yes.
Here is a good listing of the filesystems that OS X supports: <http://www.kernelthread.com/mac/osx/arch_fs.html>
