Thanks much for the response. Data and results: 1. The access point is an Asante FriendlyNet FR3002AL wireless hub/router, wired (Ethernet) to (TimeWarner's) Motorola SURFboard SB5100 cable modem. 2. The only other Mac on the network is wired (Ethernet) to that hub/router, and I verified that no AirPort code is stored in that Keychain. 3. Now I wonder if my assumption of a wrong password is correct. At that point in the Airport Setup Assistant where it calls for a password, no matter what I enter, the result is: "An error occurred joining the selected wireless network. Would you like to try again?" BTW, at that point, I can see from the menubar that AirPort is turned off as the error message pops up; I have to go through Preferences:Network:AirPort and then "Turn Airport Off" and "Turn Airport On" to restore the connection. I get the same error message if I try with or without an active AirPort connection to start. Yes, some trial-and-error was happenin' here.

Are you able to connect via AirPort Admin Utility?

Also, which base station do you have (Graphite, Snow or Extreme/Express)?
The latest AirPort 4.1 update creates an AirPort Setup Assistant which,
apparently, is only for Extreme/Express. There's now a separate utility,
AirPort Setup Assistant for Graphite or Snow, for the older base stations.
The Extreme/Express Assistant doesn't "see" the older base stations. At
least, it didn't see my Graphite base station.

The problem is somewhat compounded by the fact that, after installing the
4.1 update and restarting, the new Assistant is automatically launched.
It freaked me out for a few minutes. :)

4. I have powered-down the hub/router with no effect; I gather your
suggestion of a complete reset means more than that? If so, how best to
do it?

The problem appears to be with the AirPort Base Station. Here are some links for resetting the various base station models:

Hope this helps,
