use it again (I was able to use it on about the fourth restart while
holding "shift") and it has been working fine since. Is this a common
occurrence with OS X, or should I restart it once every couple of days
or so to start fresh?

I think there are probably a lot of reasons why X might crash. I've been
thinking lately that for some of us it might have to do with the fact that X
uses a LOT of virtual memory so there's a good deal of disk read and write. If
something confuses the read/write or a disk temporarily tops out, maybe that can
cause a lockup. One way to reduce the use of virtual memory (you can't turn it
off in X) is to add ram. Things run better in X with more ram anyway, so they
say, and it might reduce whatever bottleneck might be causing the problem. I'd
also guess that bad ram might cause lockups.

Apparently the Unix core needs periodic maintenance, which happens automatically
if you don't shut your machine down at all. There are a bunch of free utilities
out there that force the running of the various scripts, delete caches etc. I
like Cocktail, since in the "Pilot" section you can script it to do everything
automatically, including fix permissions and restart It wouldn't hurt to do
this on a periodic basis.

I don't know much about all this, so this is all speculation. But, as I said,
it wouldn't hurt.
