This seems to be the most widely reported drawback to the rev. 1s, but I'd be grateful for information on any other "surprises" I should be aware of before I take the plunge here. --- end of quote --- This is not an issue with Rev 1 motherboards, it is the Rev A roms that don't allow slaves. Roms are easy to replace, though may be expensive. If you need slaves, save the money on a rom and buy a pci ATA board. They are much faster and allow slaves.
There are no other limitations to the rev 1 motheboard as far as I know, except those based on the improved video on the later versions. The last personality card, which would digitize video to a higher resolution than the earlier A/V board, requires a Rev 3 board. That feature is antiquated by current video standards anyway. There are a few other quirks in the Beige. Running both X and native 9 isn't quite as simple as with later machines. You need xpostfacto to run Jaguar and some find it tricky to accomplish. But once installed, it's not such a big deal. Beige is a very capable and upgradeable computer. There's almost nothing a G5 will do that I can't on my 466mhz g4 Beige. Just slower. But if you are starting from scratch, a bare bones B&W might be almost as cheap and make the upgrade paths easier. Rich -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
