I'm in the opposite camp, the mid-range with flash does a good job ... better outside with full fill but not bad inside. And as far as SLRs go, yes they will be better for composition and usually higher megapixels but don't forget that they are aimed at the semi-pro or expert photographer. From the shots I've seen from the Nikon, the opposite of rational thought it true, the pictures are worse than a mid-range simply because Nikon expects the photographer to dabble with the pic in the computer before printing or before one gets a 'final' result. There are two settings, raw and another one, forget the name. Raw must be sorted out in Photoshop-type apps. As for the other setting, because of the incredible number of pixels, the pic looks so smooth it would remind you of a Poloroid (which if you recall took very fine grained pictures which gave another dimension to them as opposed to the larger grained 'kodak' prints.) The only way to get a normal looking pic would be to lower the size of the photo before you take the picture. So lots of megapixels mean a huge pic, or a real smooth looking pic when viewed at a smaller size. You'll work it out and if you can get slr, go for it. Not at 3-5 though. bm -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
