Yes, in OS X. Disk Utility has SMART stuff in it, at least in Panther. It's limited to saying either 'Verified' or 'About to fail', and there could well be some command-line app that does more or accesses the logs.
Is that the "Verify Disk" button at the bottom right of the Disk Utility window?
