Hello:
I know this may sound stupid, but I'm eager to hear from you people before I talk to my
cable company (Adelphia) in person tomorrow. I have a question.
About three months ago my video game crazy son wanted a fast connection of his
own (faster than wireless he thinks) so I had my cable company install another outlet
and I bought him a modem and had it registered.
(He connects his PC directly to the modem with ethernet cable)
This was a one-time-only charge, and my monthly bill did not go up.
Today, I had a chat session with tech support and was told that I have been undercharged approx $32/mo
for having one extra modem. That's how much I would have to pay to get my son's connection enabled again.
So is this typical? Do we have to pay extra for having more than one modem? Is your cable company just as greedy? Maybe I should try to convince my son that wireless isn't so bad.
When you say wireless I take it to mean you have an 802.11b or g router/AP/switch connected to your cable modem and his computer had a wireless connection to it. If so a separate cable modem isn't going to be significantly faster. First of, the wireless part is several times faster than the cable connection. Having two cable modems might be over all faster (might not be too) but not a lot faster.
Oh, yeah, having your cable company decide later to charge you is quite typical.
