Your computer is frozen, with what seems like a hardware problem, but
in fact it's a problem with software; QuartzExtreme to be exact. I
have had the same problem with my Rev A DP 2ghz G5, and it really
sucks that Apple has been so slow to address the problem. I think
they're more concerned with selling iPods right now. Here are some
discussions on the matter (and other maladies), some from Apple's own
forums:

And at Apple's own discussion forums (a huge thread)

The fix of disabling the QuartzExtreme has helped a lot, at least in
my machine, although is still freezes from time to time, with the fans
running full-blast. The thing that *really* burns me up is that you
don't spend $3000+ on a new rig to disable something so rudimentary to
the OS; something that works just fine on a $700 eMac. To disable QE,
fire up the Terminal in the Utilities folder and type in the following
*exactly*:

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver
GLCompositor -dict tileHeight -int 0 tileWidth -int 0

To Re-enable:

defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver GLCompositor

Suffice it to say that PowerMac G5s suffer from many issues. I have
owned Macs since the system 7
days, and this new G5 has been the worst one I've owned in terms of
stability. I'm glad I got the AppleCare! Even still I am still royally
pissed at Apple for seemingly snubbing their noses at their best
customers. The promised fix has been coming for over six months now,
with no solution in sight.

Sorry for the rant. HTH

Alex <-- Still QuartzExtreme-less
