Thanks for the information, I have read some other articles that concur with the diagnosis that Quartz Extreme has some major problems. I have read that they have been "aggressively working on a solution" for over a year! I will have plenty of ammo to fire at my Apple tech tonight when I call.
Can I get an assessment as to whether the Apple Care program is worth it on towers? I am under the impression that it is necessary for things with monitors, but I wouldn't think so with towers. Of course, it gives me three years to yell at the tech support people, but that doesn't seem to get anyone anywhere. As to your rant, misery loves company. I have been using since System 6 (Mac Plus in 1987), and I have never seen a tower with chronic problems, especially when the line of computers has been out for a while. If Apple decides to send me on the panacea route (permissions, fsck, run barefoot, etc.), I think I will just politely hang up and try the Quartz route.
