Bruce,
Is there a place to go that explains what the console log is saying in plain english? Are there entries in the system or console log when the send fails?
I get a lot of these messages in the console:
Attempt to release a printing object without first doing a retain!!!
Attempt to release a printing object without first doing a retain!!!
Attempt to release a printing object without first doing a retain!!!
Not really. If you know what you're looking for the messages are clear. Most of them are harmless error messages. The above was probably generated by a program closing a document, and releasing any printing threads even though none had been started. A failsafe, to make sure the program closes down cleanly.
But in the case we're discussing, problems with sending mail, cured by fixing permissions, you would look for something complaining about permissions, or referring to Mail. The search box in the top helps.
Generally though, the stuff in console and system log is programmer/sysadminish stuff only. heck 99.99% of the time we programmers and sysadmins ignore it too, but it's an invaluable tool to determine what's going on when something goes wrong, sort of like the 'black box' recorder in airplanes.
You're not normally running as the user 'root' are you? That causes all sorts of odd problems with OS X....I am running my computer under the installation name my installer prompted me to give.
Is that the 'root' user that I should not be using?
No. You would have to be logging on as the user 'root', and unless you've explicitly gone through the steps required to enable root, you can't log in as that user. I mentioned it because that was the cause of another lister's oddball problems on the past.
