Hi,

I just upgraded my beloved 300MHz Beige G3 desktop to
OS X 2.8, 4MB video memory, and 256MB of RAM.

I have a question about the RAM - I have heard OS X is
a memory hog, and would like to have enough for
optimum performance, but also recognize that when only
running at 300MHz I'll probably run into empty memory
pretty quick.

I am planning to replace one of the 64MB's with a
128MB, bringing total up to 320MB - and I wonder if
going any higher would be pointless....

As you can bever bee too rich or too thin, you can never have enough disk space or RAM :-)

256 should be considered the rock bottom for OSX. 512 is a good number for most, on up to as much as you can stuff in, depending on what you want to do.

If you have 64 Meg DIMMS in there, they may well be out of spec for OS X. Bad RAM is a vexing and throughly mystifying problem. Best to bite the bullet and stick a couple of new 256's in it.
