MAJORITY of posts you can only surmise that the majority of us have Modern
Macs.
There is a group of people who subscribe to this list who continue usingSNIP
'low end Macs'...either by necessity or choice (I have no clue). They also
continue to use OS 9 and prior as their main OS....once again out of
necessity or choice...I have no idea. They also 'appear' to refuse to use
an application that costs more than (gasp) $100.00....(ibid). These people
also 'appear' to be the minority of subscribers.
Proper use of the Mac is NOT chugging away on your PowerPC 7200 (although it
'was' my first Mac). Running multiple apps while listening to iTunes and
previewing a movie clip while downloading and chatting to somebody in the
next city SIMULTANEOUSLY is the proper use.
I'm certain that a lot of you don't disagree. I might not always say it
with the maximum tact, but 'thems the facts'.
I am in digest mode and have just read the first four items of this thread. Please let me add my comments.
One cannot judge the entire Mac user population by observing the members of this G-List. We self-appointed members of the G-List are here for our own specific purposes. There are many other Mac folks who gainfully use older Macs. It may be that the minority (as a type) in this list are the majority in other lists. Take a look at the list of lists at: http://www.lowendmac.com/lists/index.shtml .
This G-List has 401 members. Amazing, the PCI PowerMacs list has over 626 members. The 1st PowerMacs has 413. And on and on. We know that some of us subscribe to several lists. No doubt many members of lists dedicated to the older Macs are there as hobbyists or collectors. But there is useful work being done on the older machines.
From my participation in another list dedicated to Reunion, a genealogy program, I know that many Mac users use their Macs to engage in specific, limited tasks, not for the thrill of the latest technology. Hence, many have no need for, and many cannot afford, the luxury of the latest and greatest.
So, when that old 6300, or 7600, or 9600, or beige G3 dies, only then will many folks find themselves looking at the mini or the e-Mac or an i-Mac for the necessary, not self-gratifying, replacement.
