DO NOT GO CHEAP ON THE MONITOR!!

No kidding. For me personally the mini totally changes my upgrade strategy. Previously I was planning on buying mid-range iMacs every few years, but honesty that creates a lot of environmental waste (buying monitors & other parts I don't need). I'm no enviro-nut, but I also like to be a responsible consumer where I can.

My new upgrade strategy is to get a big honkin' LCD (such as Apple's 23") and make that last 10 years. That's what I did with my previous monitor, which I bought in 1994 when I was using PCs. It was a 17" and cost me a chunk of money, but it also served me for a decade. I hope the same would be true of the 23". The only problem is the entry fee: nearly $3,000 for a 1.42GHz mini w/SuperDrive, 512MB RAM, and a 23" LCD. But in a year or two when I can just buy another mini and have the latest software too, and when I do it again a year or two after that... THAT is when it really starts to economize. It keeps me in the latest software and hardware... for not much in the way of upgrade cost.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I just bought my latest iMac last year after iLife 04 was announced, so it's still too new to be worth replacing. Its 1.25 GHz still feels fast, and the mini would net me nothing except some newer software. For me, next year's mini might really be worth considering.

That being said, I am still a CRT holdout. While the flat panels look good and take up less desk space, I still prefer the picture from my CRTs. I prefer Sony Trinitron flat CRTs. I have 3 21" (1 at home and 2 at work-1 pc for CAD and a Mac for everything else)

Perhaps you've never used a digital (ADC or DVI) LCD? Analog (VGA) LCDs aren't worth it to me, but digital ones are simply amazing - now that I've gone digital, it's hard for me to use anything else. Fortunately my employer feeds my habit with a PowerBook & a NEC 20" DVI LCD. (The NEC is a multi-input unit, and my Win2k box is on the VGA input... nowhere near as sharp as the DVI input.)
