I've got several pdf file icons on my B&W desktop that the kids downloaded and I can't get rid of them. When I try to drag them to the trash, a message comes up saying that "they are being used by another task right now" and to try later. How can I get rid of them (I also have a MacOSXUdate10.2.8.dmg on the desktop that I can't move either). Any suggestions? Thanks. Warren

You can click on the icon once, and while in the Finder go to the File>Get Info menu (or just click once and press command-i). It would tell you there, under "open with", which program uses it. Then you can open the Activity Monitor app, in Utilities, and find the program that is using that icon and quit the process.

If it's just a problem with a locked file then when you get to the Get Info menu just click the box next to the word "Locked" and it will be unlocked so you can trash it.

Or, if you prefer a Unix solution, do this:
- open Terminal (or X11). Both reside in /Applications/Utilities.
- type: cd ~/Desktop
- use rm to remove the files. e.g.: "rm -i *pdf" - the "-i" tells rm to inquire about each file, so you can specify y or n on whether to delete each individual file.
