Or... Launch OS 9, locate the offending icons on the desktop of the OS X volume, drag them to the trash, and empty the trash from the finder menu while holding down the option key.

True, but simply rebooting OS X would have freed the files as well.


That may work on most files, but I ran into an IE (incomplete download) file in 10.2.8 that resisted the simpler OS X solution.
