Advised by othet "G-list" member to use "System Disk" (from Apple) to get back to OSX. This worked a few times.
This REALLY sounds like a dead PRAM battery. These systems do all sorts of funky things when that starts going, and it isn't always losing the date and time that's the first indicator.
