I have been told by a local Mac Seconds dealer that there is a possibility
of using SATA from a USB connection, inside the machine to run a SATA hard
drive, thus not requiring the additional IDE Driver Card, AND a USB/firewire
card. It is obvious that the more cards that one puts ionto your thre (3)
slots, means that you'll have less slots for next time.

Comments, please?

I think the USB 2.0 Combo cards can be kinda flaky on Beiges.
Something about the USB specification supported. You'll need to keep an eye
out for that and look closely at the machines supported by the particular
cards you are looking at. OWC has had a pretty good selection of cards and
posts pretty clearly the ones supported on Beiges and those that are not.

XPostFacto is working on some machines without the upgraded video, but
obviously it will work better on ones that have upgraded cards. Just by
using an ATI Rage 128 that came with the Blue & Whites will help the
compatibility, although obviously Radeon Mac Editions, Radeon 7000s or
Radeon 9200s are better. Remember to stay away from the AGPs. You'll need
a PCI card.

There is something flakey with some of these machines and Panther. I have
several Beige machines upgraded to Panther, but one in particular is subject
to random freezes and it started back on Jaguar. I've tried every hack I
can find, but it just won't work. I think the problem with these
problematic machines may start at 10.2.8 (at least some machines start
having problems there, even before you get to Panther), but I can't say all
do. Best advice I can give you is to put Panther on the machine with
XpostFacto and see if it works. If it does, you can probably safely add
some memory, and other cards.

I think the biggest single improvement you can make is get a new pci ide
card. One of my machines has a fast SCSI card and I was really surprised by
how much faster it is. It truly is like a new machine.
I'll bet it boots up in a third of the time it normally takes. Any every
process that requires hard drive usage goes MUCH faster. Of course you're
gonna want a much bigger (and faster) drive to go with that card.
