There is another possible "gotcha" you should check out. Be sure the "OS 9 drivers" have been installed on your hard disk. If not, you will not be able to boot them (or even mount them) in OS 9. Select the drive in DiskUtility and click the Info button. If OS 9 drivers are not installed, you will probably have to reformat to add them. At least that's how I did it. :-(
So...I did so but there's nothing that indicates one way or the other whether these drivers are there. Does that mean they are not there? Which would mean another install, I guess?
If, when you installed OS X Jaguar, you checked the box to install the OS 9 drivers, the drivers are indeed there. Folks here with UNIX and Terminal experience can tell us where to look and verify that in the naked code. But I would not mess with that.
Just install OS 9 on top of the Jaguar. Download the updates from Apple to make it 9.2.2. With OS X running (Panther version), I used System Preferences Classic panel to tell the machine how to use Classic. The Jaguar setup may be the same.
As to another comment you made, that you've read you need to install OS 9 before OS X, I recall having to do that with an earlier version of OS X, like 10.0.4, with the install CDs that came with my QuickSilver G4. That is no longer true.
