{Slightly different question. How do you tell OSX to use a 35G partition as scratch/cache/whatever ?}
As usual, (thinking can be dangerous sometimes) question generated. The OSX 8Gig partition limit, is that for SCSI disks as well as ATA/IDE?
No.
Makes sense! I was trying to do a backup of the boot volume.
Don't, or use something like Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the boot volume to another disk drive. <http://www.bombich.com> Also see his hints on moving the /Users to another partition, which frees up a LOT of space on a 8gb volume. Finally, if you did a standard install, use Delocalizer (also on his web site) to remove a whole lot of extraneous language files.
Unless you have scads and scads of apps this keeps a decent sized boot volume below about 5 GB leaving lots of room for CD burning.
You can't move /Applications off to another volume, but you can always put a symlink in the /Applications directory to something like a folder MoreApps on another volume. Apps don't HAVE to be in the Applications directory, but things work better if they are.
Restoring the boot volume would probably be a lot more of a hassle than simply re-installing the OS.
Simply back up the /Users directory and you're safe.
All I've got to do, is boot from something else!!
What are you trying to back up?
(and as an aside, you don't want to be logged in as root routinely, aside from the normal 'root' issues, many things in OS X don't work right.
That I'm very aware of. For a long time. The original OS9 (Radio Shack MC6809, Color Computer. Linux and now Apple OS9.1 & X
I see this problem mostly with folks who have come to OS X from Linux or other unix variants. OS X is Unix, but it's considerably different from most.
I've been meaning to E-Mail you and tell you how much I appreciate your posts here on the 'G-list'. You are an excellent example of someone who is 'Giving Back' the knowledge you have accumulated over the years! And I for one am aware of how much that contribution is really worth!
<blush> Thanks!
