I recently purchased a 450 Mhz zif/cpu (from a supposedly working B&W) on Ebay and received it in the mail yesterday. I've been trying all morning to get it working, but it keeps locking up my B&W. I first tried setting the jumpers to what they should be for 450 Mhz and I had the problems. I actually had it running in OS 9 for awhile, but every time I would try to log on to the web the system would lockup. Could not get it to boot up in OSX at all, would not make it past the blue screen that gives the status reports. I tried to set the speed at 400 and had the same results. Put my 400 back in and things are working fine. Should I give up and get my money back or is there something else I could try?
I had a similar problem with a XLR8 G4/450 that I tried to put in my B&W.
It turns out that on the XLR8 ZIF, there are jumpers that need to be placed on the ZIF itself. As soon as I set the ZIF jumpers, the Mac booted just fine.
On a new XLR8 processor, I have the motherboard jumpers set at 450MHz while the ZIF jumpers set at 550MHz.
About This Mac reports that the processor is indeed running at 550 MHz.
I hope this helps.
