All new drives seems to be ATA/100 or ATA/133. Will they work? Are they downward compatible?
Yes they're fine, but your drive won't be much faster, since your interface is still ATA66. Faster drives will just slow down for the slower bus speed.
... but even if raw transfer speeds won't go up, seek times etc will be faster, won't they? The current fitted by Apple is a Maxtor 91023U2 (stated as 5400 RPM, 2 Mb buffer, average seek time: 9 ms, average latency: 5 ms, reading transfer rate: 27 Mb/s).
Is this HD as fast as the ATA/66 can handle? Is there no point in getting a 7200 RPM HD?
