Serial ports and OSX

How can you get 10.3 that is xpostfacto'ed on to a Beige G3 to 
recognize the serial ports? We want to use the old LaserWriter, and 
therefore run AppleTalk over the serial port instead of ethernet.

There must be some shareware or similar that can do this? As 10.2 WAS 
supported for the Beige, would it work there?
