If you install the X window system you can run Open Office to edit Word
docs, Gimp to edit photos, as well as other Unix/Linux programs to
handle all kinds of tasks. There are other native OSX
freeware/shareware programs out there also. Many FTP programs as well
and Preview will open PDF files if that is what you need Acrobat for.
BTW, the X window system comes with Panther, but it's a bit difficult
to find for Jag sometimes. As far as speed and RAM are concerned, more
is better, but I find acceptable performance even on my beige G3 with a
266 Mhz processor.

Is "Open Office" actually Word, or does it just open the documents? I've
been using Word much of the time every day since system 6, and can't imagine
giving it up-- AppleWorks isn't remotely as good, in fact the couple of
times I've tried it it's driven me goofy. Same goes for Photoshop, even if
you only need a few of its gazillion capacities, losing those few is
likewise unimaginable. As for Acrobat, I need it to *create* PDFs, not to
read them. Anyway as previously stated, I'm going to try X, but with many
reservations.

Victoria

Nope, OpenOffice is not Word. It is the free alternative to Word. You may not be happy with the way things are done compared to Word, but as someone else mentioned you could always just use classic to run your old version of Word. I know what you mean about AppleWorks, I don't think this is anyone's idea of a proper word processor! I don't know what you use Photoshop for, but Gimp does a surprisingly good job of editing photos. As for creating PDF's, I seem to recall this was a feature of OpenOffice as well. Being as you are planning on trying OSX, best just to do that and then pose questions to the list as to the things you find lacking.
