Bruce is making a pun, because what probably happened to the two Macs is that the USB *short*ed something, which killed the Macs. Bruce then said they were killed in *short* order. Two uses of the same word...

"Short order" of course meaning "one right after the other."

My friend now has two seemingly phucked iMacs thanks
to a crap USB hub, something which is not in any way
foreseeable, and however I look at it, it just doesn't seem
the slightest bit funny...

It's not the killing of the Macs that's funny... it's Bruce's use of the word "short."
