I have been reading this for a few days now so I thought I would chime
in and try to help. I have a LJ 5 (very similar) here at the office and
I may have a 4 in my basement at home, so I will try to setup one of
them tonight. Before then I have a few suggestions, that might help.

First of all take the printer offline. Then go the TEST Menu and take
print the SELF TEST page. This should contain all the printer
configuration including the JetDirect card setup. You will need to make
sure that Ethertalk is enabled on the card. If it isn't, you will have
to enable it through the MIO Menu.

There is only ONE item in the MIO Menu: CFG NETWORK (=YES/NO*). There are no card setup options.

I would tell you how to, but I can't
find a copy of the JetDirect manual or the Users manual of the 4 series.
I should know more when I can look at mine.

B&W G3, OS9.2, HP LaserJet 4M Plus

OK, I managed to get a selftest page printed (confirming the need for a replacement fuser, assuming that the seller was correct in telling me the toner is less than half-used).

For what it's worth, this states that:
6mb RAM (better put the two 16mb sticks from the LaserWriter Pro 630 into it... should be correct
application... but what a pain opening the LW!!)
HP JetDirect: J2552B
Firmware Revision: A.05.05
Lan HW Address: 0800092E441A
Port Select: 10Base-T (ie ethernet)
MFG ID: 9999000700000300
I/O Card: Ready (this means the JetDirect card is correctly set-up)

AppleTalk Status: Ready
STALK Net: 65281 Node: 204 P2
LTALK Net: 0 Node: 217
AppleTalk Name: AG's LaserJet 4M Plus (indicating that my name-change went through before the crash)
ETALK Zone:
TCP/IP Status: Disabled

DLC/LLC Status: Disabled

Formatter Number: S460180NEEV

I/O Buffering: 10k bytes allocated of 100k bytes available
Additional Memory needed to enable resource saving: 1mb

Also from what you said earlier I got the impression that you have the
printer plugged directly into the computer.

Yes, a straight 10Base-T cable. I do have a dongle, but it has a different connector (it was for connecting the 6116 to the LW Pro 630, so the computer end is an AAUI connector).

If this is the case you
should probably go out and get an Ethernet switch (10/100) and connect
both your computers and the printer together. You can get a 5 port for
less than $30.

The manual says these should not be used as they produce power surges which will damage the printer.

The manual gives no help with the utility, as it assumes that the utility is actually working properly. Mine sure ain't!

I tried installed the software again, in case the HP LaserJet Utility was corrupted by the crash, but it came out exactly the same... most items disabled/hidden. It was from the same installer (I tend to keep installers in an "Installers" folder). I just can't understand what happened to the Utility... unless there was some security item I inadvertently clicked just before the crash, and which then locked me out! I have tried trashing the Utility's preferences, but no change resulted.

There are no Ethernet zones on my Mac... but then, there never were, and the printers were certainly usable most of the time...

I note that Apple's Desktop Printer Utility is unable to access Printer Descriptions in the System folder... perhaps that's why I can't find the printer in the Chooser? But why would this happen?

I'm going nuts!
