Bruce.  I had thought of that but I'm a little puzzleed as to how to handle it. 
The computer and monitors and a couple of peripherals are on an APC.  The mixer
and a bunch of audio/video equipment are on a different surge protected power
strip.  So the ground is probably not common.  I'm concerned about adding too
much additional stuff to the APC.

There is a ground stud on the mixer.   If I wanted to ground it to the computer,
I guess I could just run a lead from there to somewhere on the computer, I
suppose the power supply, or where?

Any suggestions would be very helpful.  

I think maybe an inexpensive usb audio i/o might be the neatest solution.  Any
suggestions for a good one for under $100?  It needs to work in os 9 as well as
X.  One I saw seemed to be ok for that.  Another wanted a built in usb port, not
a card, though I've never noticed any peripheral where it really mattered. 
Maybe audio-in in usb 1 is pushing it, though.
