"safe mode" with the keyboard combo - didn't work. NONE of the
startup keyboard combos work - presumably because I'm using a PS/2
 keyboard and a USB adapter.

Wade, I use a PS/2 keyboard (a Microsoft keyboard at that!) and a Belkin PS2-USB adapter, and the startup key sequences work fine.

I'm using a Compaq branded USB adapter (it says Micro on the back) and a Gateway keyboard.

You do know that the PC Alt key = the Mac option/alt key, and that the Windows key = the Apple key, yes?

Yes, I do. I even labeled the keys to help me remember. But holding down C to start from the CDRom/DVD doesn't work either.
