Victoria,

A PCI drive controller card of some type is probably what you need most with a Rev 1 B&W. I used an Acard AEC-6280M ATA/133 card for several months in mine, and they tend to be a bit more affordable than the Sonnets. OWC (macsales.com) is one of Low End Mac's sponsors and they tend to have better than average prices on all that kinda stuff. 80 GB 7200 RPM UltraATA drives are very affordable.

But if you feel the need for *real* speed, get an Ultra SCSI controller and shop for LVD SCSI drives. I'm currently using an ATTO UL2D card (Ultra 3 - 80 MB/sec data transfer) and Seagate 10K Cheetah drive, and it really gives Blue Too new legs - noticeably peppier than a 7200 RPM Maxtor on the ATA/133 card. Quality SCSI gear tends to be pricier than IDE/ATA, but with judicious shopping you can config your B&W quite nicely without breaking the bank.
