Jack, what version are you running?

When I got this powerbook, I think it was running 10.3.7

When I dragged its textedit icon to the desktop, it just moved.

I was kinda waiting for tiger to come out, and hoping it would install textedit.

I guess I have programs that will answer until then--Ewordlite and OpenOffice, and a demo of nisus writer.

Thanks for all the fish...

Maybe someone with textedit can try dragging the "shortcut" from the dock to the desktop and checking for info from there.

I drag the dock icon to the desktop, and as advertised it bounces right back to the dock because the program is open. When I close TextEdit and drag the dock's TextEdit icon to the desktop, the alias' icon disappears in a cloud of smoke -- also as advertised -- because it is the alias of a closed program.

The TextEdit program itself remains in my Applications folder.

Whatever -- now you know what to expect, and how to avoid the problem in the future. As I understand it, your problem is now to either find your original TextEdit program lurking somewhere on your HDD, or to get a new copy of textEdit, is it not?

When you click on a dock icon and hold down the click pad or mouse button you get a small menu of options for dealing with the item. In the case of the dock's textEdit icon the menu is:

   Show in Finder
   Hide
   Quit

if the progranm is open, but only;

   Show in Finder

if the program is closed.

When I select Show in Finder the folder in which TextEdit is contained opens in a new window and the Textedit program icon is visible, and one can then deal with it as desired.

Good Luck, Jack
