Tom,
   I've had a problem before with some "blank" RTF
files and here's what worked for me:
Open the file in TextEdit or other RTF-capable program
<command> A      (to grab All)
Change the color to black or a dark one
That was it. Somehow the color had gotten changed to
white, I don't know how.  A bug maybe?
