Hello David,
Thanks for the reply.

The hard drive checks out fine using disk utility; I haven't checked it with fsck. I ran the Apple hardware test, and the the logic board test failed with error scc/3/7. The problem was getting progressively worse; it was easy to cause a freeze by running a few demanding aps at once.

I pulled out the OWC processor upgrade, and replaced it with the original 450 Mhz processor. It passes the hardware test, and I have been loading it with processes that would have frozen the OWC processor. So far it has been functioning perfectly, although sooo slooowly...

I purchased the OWC upgrade less than a year ago, so it is still under warranty.

David,

Since you've checked those items, maybe look for some OS issues after verifying your ram is OK. Do you have Diskwarrior 3 installed or on CD?

If not, have you run fsck from single user mode? This repairs the unix side of the operating system. Print this out for a guide.

To run fsck, shut down your computer. Hold down the Command and S keys and start up. You will see a bunch of text scroll down. You can let go of the keys any time the text starts scrolling. Give it a minute and it will stop and come to a prompt.

Type in fsck -y, if your drives are Journaled, it will tell you something like use -f. So then just type in fsck -f. Make sure to leave a space before the dash.

It will then go through a systems check. This will take several minutes. It will then either say something like making repairs, or no repairs needed. (Just can't remember exact text at the moment). If it made repairs, type in the fsck -f (or -y) again. Let it proceed.

Once you are certain it is done, type in LOGOUT. It will then boot up to the desktop. Once it does, restart again.

You didn't mention in your first post, but do you have more then one hard drive running? If not, you should get one, it can even be as small as a 10 gig, but at the price of drives, you might as well have something useable. Anyway, you want the second drive to be able to run utilities from, so you can repair your main drive using Disk Utility or other utility apps.

If you have no second hard drive right now, at least you can run permissions from disk utility once you reboot. Definitely find a second drive if you don't have one and install the OS on it and any other utility programs you have.

Good luck

Dave

Hello Dave,

Thank you for the reply. I have re-seated the ram, checked all of the connections, and still had a freeze. The computer has an apple pro mouse, and I switched it with another mouse to see if the mouse may be causing the problem. Next I will switch out the RAM and the video card.

 Thanks again,
 David
