Perhaps if Apple could strike a deal with a struggling PC builder or two, they could actually remain competitive. Look at online entities that sell both Mac and PC products, and you'll find that the currently shipping version of OS X is cheaper than the currently shipping versions of XP Home and XP Pro. I looked at CompUSA for my comparisons, as they also have a brick and mortar presence. I also have to ask, from personal experience of being a dual platform user, how many PCs being sold to the home market do you see shipping with XP Pro that's still in the below $1000.00 price point? The last I looked, the Mac OS shipping with a dual 2.7GHz G5 tower going to a business entity is the same as the Mac OS shipping with a 1.8GHz 17" iMac G5, and in both cases can handle media applications as well as XP Media Center. So while Microsoft is selling 3 "flavors" of it's Windows OS, Apple is selling it's Mac OS as a "Swiss Army knife."

Since we're not going to see any Mactel computers until this time next year, according to the article at the Apple web site, it will be interesting to see what gets waved before our eyes before the first for real x86 Macs hit store shelves.

How are we going to explain to Joe and Jane Sixpack why they need to spend the extra money on our beloved Macs? Is Steve Jobs going to turn Apple into another NeXT - software only? If so, it seems to me he runs the risk of turning OS X into another OS/2. Consider this conversation:

Buyer: "So this new $300 Dell comes with Windows right?"
Seller: "Yes."
Buyer: "And to get OS X I have to spend another $130?"
Seller: "Yes."
Buyer: "Why should I spend another $130, more than one-third of the cost of the computer, just for an OS?"
Seller: "Uhh....."

I just don't get it.
