How are we going to explain to Joe and Jane Sixpack why
they need to spend the extra money on our beloved Macs? Is
Steve Jobs going to turn Apple into another NeXT - software
only? If so, it seems to me he runs the risk of turning OS
X into another OS/2. Consider this
conversation:
Buyer: "So this new $300 Dell comes with Windows right?"
Seller: "Yes."
Buyer: "And to get OS X I have to spend another $130?"
Seller: "Yes."
Buyer: "Why should I spend another $130, more than
one-third of the
cost of the computer, just for an OS?"
Seller: "Uhh....."
I just don't get it.<<

You actually think that's a hard sell to explain why Mac OS
X is better than Windows in this example???
Apple will only allow OS X to run on Macs. Dell will never have the
profit making opportunity. Thus the conversation will be:
Buyer: "So you're Macs are as cheap as Dells and more powerful!"
Seller: "Sure thing!."
Buyer: "I love Apple, man my iPod thingy rox! I'll take 30!" (All the
iPod users will want a cool new Mac :)
Seller: "30 new Intel based Macs?."
Buyer: "Yeah, I don't want to run out?"
Seller: "You know they don't expire like eggs right?. Oh, sorry I've
been using Windows, instead of reloading I just buy a new PC when it
starts to crap out."
Hehe :) Anyway, point being that a lot of people will choose Mac OS
over Windows, especially if Apple adopts a decent advertising campaign
like those switch commercials. If regular Joe knows they can call up
Apple and get one for the same price as a Dell the switch will be made.
