Apple is going to continue to design their own systems - motherboard and ASICs included. That means OS X is going to contain drivers and whatnot that use *Apple*'s implementation of the motherboard. OS X simply won't "understand" the interconnects and controllers on regular PC motherboards.

Now, let's face it, any software can be hacked. It just depends on how much time and effort you're willing to put into the project. So whatever Apple does to lock Mac OS X to their own motherboards will be an ongoing effort...

Seeing how you apparently have some sort of inside info here, if what you are saying is true, maybe you can explain how it is that these new "macs" will be able to run Windoze natively? Everything I have read so far says that this will be the case. Somehow I can't see how it will be possible for mainboards, controller chips, and who knows what all to be "special" Apple stuff, and still allow Windoze to run without any hacks needed. It still sounds to me like these will be basically PC internals in Apple cases. If this is the case (and I've seen nothing so far to suggest otherwise), what it boils down to is the death of the Macintosh as we've always known it. "If it walks like a duck, and quakes like a duck..." IOW, if it's a PC inside, and runs the PC OS (Windoze) natively, then it's a PC, despite having the Apple name on the box. I read an article the other day regarding the new "Macintels", where they were quoting an Intel suit, and he made some comment about "Apple PC's", and my first thought was: "Gee, this guy just doesn't get it...", but after thinking about it for a while, I realized that he's actually correct. In two years, that's just what they will be; "Apple PC's", not Macintosh's anymore. Actually, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Apple drop the Macintosh name entirely in the not-too-distant future. Jobs has been slowly moving away from the Mac name in regards to the OS ever since OS X first came on the scene. Think about it: OS X "Jaguar", OS X "Panther", OS X "Tiger". They really don't refer to OS X as "the Mac OS", now it's just: "OS X whatever". Actually, to me it would be an insult to the memory of the original Macintosh to call these new machines "Macs". An Apple-designed case wth PC guts doesn't make a Macintosh, OS X or otherwise.
Rest In Peace, "Macintosh"! At least some of us will miss you!
