Weird-oh-rama, Santa...the install of MacOS X Panther that Wegener Media did
when they upgraded my hard drive was to a single 30GB (actually 27GB)
partition. The install seemed to work out fine and everything is swell.
Perhaps there is a hidden /boot partition at the beginning of the HD? You
used to do this routinely with Linux with lots of old machines. The venerable
Intel BX chipset required a 8GB> partition for the boot OS. This applies to
Windoze too. IDE bug.

Hopefully my install will be on the HD for a long time to come, and I won't
have to reinstall. I do have to install some extra stuff from the disks, like
dev tools and "BSD tools." Hopefully this issue won't raise its ugly head
then. I also updated my install to 10.3.9...will installing these "extras" be
a problem now?

I'm new to X so expect newless cluebee questions for me on the list for a
while...apologies in advance...

Take care,
Michelle
