Seriously, I missed that q. As for scratched CDs, you can either
buy one of those "resurfacing" products, and that may get you
acceptable results, or just make sure your iTunes is set to verify
the rip, or be more conservative, or whatever the option is.
That might get you better results too.
My question related to iTunes crashing/locking when trying to
rip a CD with an unreadable scratch, and as there is no way to
tell whether a scratch is unreadable in iTunes without ripping
it, I'm a bit stuck, and I ain't gonna clean/resurface every
half shabby library CD I borrow...

Technically nothing wrong with "time shifting," as long as you
delete the info after you've listened to it.
Ooh, you should have heard the stick I got from some of the pratts
