It's just a desktop with a fast CPU. Servers are another whole class of critters; in fact Apple's *servers* compete VERY well on price with Dell's, HP's
or IBM's servers. ...No, you would probably whine that it wasn't $750>>

Why are you being such a <bleeping bleep>. seriously man, dont talk like that on these lists youre acting like a <bleep>. There is a comparison between a MacMini and a bottom of the line dell...there both made for people who cant afford more expensive computers. If an XBox with a triple core G5 in it can cost $300 i think Apple can make a MacMini for $400 and dont tell me otherwise.

I will tell you otherwise. The 970 "G5" processor that is GOING to be in the XBox uses just a subset of the chip that Apple uses in the G5s, not the same chip, just a member of the same family. Kind of like the 68040 that had a math coprocessor and the 68LC040 which did not. Both are members of the 68040 family, but they are not the same chip.

And yes, ANY computer can be a server, dont tell me otherwise.

Yes, any computer CAN be a server, but server class hardware is another story completely. True servers are designed to run 24x7x365 in a server room environment. They are designed to, for example, serve multiple files from a database to hundreds of users simultaneously. They are designed with the idea that no matter what the application, a failure of any part that takes down the server is WAY more expensive than just the cost of hardware.

For example, I have a small company that had the HD die on the server. While I had a backup of the info, the server did not like the information on the backup of the boot partition and it took a while to finally get it going. It took me almost 2 days to get everything completely up and running again (and set up the HD with a mirror raid).

Now, this is a small company, 17 employees, 4 trucks on the road and 3 people in the office. For 2 days, they could not bill, enter accounts receivable, accounts payable, or enter freight received. A regular pc, even a fast one, would have died long before that under the load that that Server put up with.

It is like any tool, there are amateur grade tools, and professional grade tools. For example, would you, not knowing anything else about them, rather trust your car to a mechanic that had a handfull of KMart blue light special tools or one that has a well organized chest of tools from Snap-On or Craftsman?

and no, I
wont whine if Apple makes a 64 bit tower system for $1k.

The Apple store has recently had the refurb 1.6GHz G5 for $1199, not quite $1000, but well within spitting distance

I dont know why you
have to speak with such an attitude every time you post a response.

Bruce rarely posts with an attitude. But when people post things that are known wrong, he does not hesitate to correct them. He knows of what he speaks and when he makes a small mistake, like forgetting that a beige G3 can have up to Jaguar installed without using Xpostfacto, there are people on the list, myself included, that are almost pleased that we can point out an error that he has made, just to prove that he is human and that he PROBABLY did not get a perfect score on the latest MacAddict Geek quiz, just a 59 out of 60 (I got a 49). He also freely admits those rare occasions that he is wrong.

BTW, Bruce if you are reading this, how can you keep the server rooms cool enough to avoid a total melt down in Arizona summers?
