How come you don't just burn your data to CDs? Can't you do this with
your iMac?
I could, but the sheer volume of it (~50GB) is prohibitive for a
solution like that, and even doing DVD backups it would take 10 discs
every time I wanted a full backup.
A CDRW and Toast will do the trick very nicely. It does for
me. I have a G3/266 Beige, OS 9.2.2, 20 gig Western Digital HD, and a
Powerbook 5300c, OS 8.6, 750 meg HD. Although both these Macs are
equally
important and are used daily, truth be told, the Powerbook is my "out
of
the house G3," meaning that if somehow I suddenly lost all the data on
it, I could recover it from the G3, which is scrupulously backed up.
My
backup procedure:
1. "Dynamic" backups (stuff I'm currently working on), I actually use a
Zip drive for. These backups get done anywhere from hourly or so (if
it's
in progress, and really important), or daily. BUT....
That's what I do with my Quicken data. Anytime I change something, I
back it up to 4 places: my Linux box, my USB flash drive, my OS X
fileserver, and my iPod (if it's connected).
2. Every two weeks, I burn all the data on the G3 with my CDRW, using
Toast 5. I like rewritable CDs better than "plain" CDs because I can
reuse the same CDs, although I have both kinds.
Anyway, I never saw the need to buy an external hard drive, and I'd
never
do it for backups. I mean after all, even a way too big for now 250 gig
HD will fill up eventually even if you only use it for backups. If you
ask me, it's faster, easier, and takes up so much less space to make CD
backups -- and I'm sure when you run out of CDs, it's easier to get
more
of THOSE than to keep buying hard drives.
I wouldn't keep the hard disk-based backup data forever. I would only
keep it for a cycle or two. In my backup scheme, I would probably keep
it for only two cycles per drive, then remove it. That way, the 250GB
HD would be plenty of room for the foreseeable future.
Thanks for sharing.
