I may be confused:

What is Classic?
We have OS 8.x and 9.x is this classic?
We have OS 10.0,2,3,4 is this classic?

Classic is OS 9.2 running WITHIN X.

"Classic" is not an OS, but is the name of the special OSX software which runs OS 9 from within OSX. If you did a standard install of OSX, it will have "Classic".

If you have had OS 9 on your machine before installing OSX, and you don't initialize the drive (which erases everything on it), then OS 9 is still on the drive, and in the upper right menubar should be an icon with a "9" in it (for OS 9). If you click on it, it will drop a list of items, one of which says "Start Classic". This will launch Classic which in turn launches OS9, all running under OSX. Then you can run any softwares, either those for OSX or those for OS 9.

It's a similar vehicle to VirtualPC, which allows you to run Windows under Mac OS, if that helps. IOW, "Classic" runs OS 9 under OSX.

If you open a software designed to run on OS 9 or less, and OS 9 exists on the HD, then Classic should start automatically by default, but you'll have to wait until it loads, then the app will launch. Can take several minutes, depending on your machine.

I have never tried to run anything less than OS 9 in Classic, and have never met anyone who did, so I cannot advise you about that. Many apps running under Classic will require the latest CarbonLib update in order to run, because a whole slew of software has been written to run under either OS.

Ken N.
