Harry Freeman writes,

<Well to be honest, without being able to touch and feel your monitor,
from your description it sounds like the "fly-back" transformer had a
failure. The "fly-back" is triggered by the horizontal drive circuit
and it generates the high-voltage that lights up the screen. However
when the "fly-back" goes, you usually will be able to smell it like
something has burned.>

There was no smell at all. Good thing, too. The smell of something
burning would've freaked me out trying to find out if my apartment was
catching on fire.

<Or since you once described that the display was real large (off the
screen in all directions) then it is possible that the horizontal and
vertical drive circuits had a problem. Since your monitor probably has
an interrogated circuit chip that controls the vertical and horizontal
drive its a good possibility that this chip bit the dust.>

I think you're confusing me with the fellow who wrote in with the problem
with colors and sizes. In my case, I had tried to wake my G3 up from
sleep mode and when I touched a key, the screen stayed dark. When I
checked to see if the connections between the computer and monitor were
disconnected or loose, they weren't. Plus, the little green LED labeled
"power" was noticeably less bright than I was accustomed to seeing it,
and since then, it's been out completely. Yeah, I'm just letting it sit
right where it is until I get the replacement, so I haven't unplugged or
disconnected it yet. But in any event, I never saw any prior weird
behavior in terms of how the colors and sizes looked.
