Panther FireWire Bug

Overview

Even before the official release of Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther" on October 24, 2003, we were reporting MacInTouch reader experiences with corrupted FireWire hard drives and lost files.

A week later, Apple acknowledged a very serious "Panther" FireWire bug that that the company blamed on an Oxford 922 bridge device popular with drive manufacturers. Just connecting a FireWire 800 drive to a Mac running "Panther" can ruin the data on the drive. The problem does not occur with earlier versions of Mac OS X, however.

This report collects notes from Apple, third-party drive manufacturers and MacInTouch readers to explain the problem, the solutions and best practices for managing the whole issue.
