I think the problem was with any Oxford bridge device, not just LaCie's
repackaging. 

Mac offered a firmware upgrade for firewire drives so did Oxford.

 You can get firmware upgrades for Oxford Bridge products (just about any
firewire box has an Oxford chip in it) from the Oxford wbsite.  It's really a
neat site.  You can even get firmware that would allow master and slave drives
in the same box.  Probably worth keeping your firewire box firmware up to date,
even though the Panther bug is history.
