Read their Terms of Service: they can pretty much do anything they want.

I hope you have backups of those websites, because they're not responsible for THAT either.

This is why paying for your website is preferable to relying on the kindness of Yahoo. I'd wager these changes were asked for by their advertisers, and since they're the ones paying the bills, they get listened to.

When YOU'RE paying the bills, YOU get listened to.

That said, even 4.0 transitional HTML will run just fine on old browsers, you just can't use all the nifty features either new to 4.0 or deprecated from 3.5. Some things changed.

Plain Old HTML should still work.
