Hello all,

Just bought my first mac...actually I bought two. But to the question: I have a G3 B&W 350mhz with OS9.2 (so says the guy on ebay!). It powers up but
won't boot. The screen shows a flashing folder with a question mark
alternating with a flashing folder with two faces(?) on it. ???????

Basically, it's saying it cannot find a system folder, which contains the operating system, on the startup drive. The computer cannot function without it.

There can be a number of reasons.

NOTE: I cannot take any responsibility for what _you_ decide to do, but here's where I would start.

Since it was shipped, the memory cards can sometimes pop loose in shipping (I've never had it happen, but I know people who have).

1) With the Mac powered down, pull the power plug out (rear panel).

2) On the right side of the Mac, pull the ring latch and GENTLY lower the access door.

3) The memory slots and cards should be very obvious. Make sure they are all seated in the slots properly, but don't _force_ anything too hard. The end latches on each end of the card(s) should lock in the cards. If any are popped open, it's a good chance the card is loose.

NOTE: Speaking for myself (again), I might decide to unlatch and carefully work the memory cards out, noting the order and which slot each card came from. then reseat and relatch them.

4) Try to see how much memory it has, and also check the PCI cards, if it has any, and make sure they're seated properly too. If a can of air is available, blow dust off all the components.

5) Close the door, making sure it's latched.

6) Put the power plug back in and start it up. You can hear the fans, but you should also be able to hear the whir of the HD spinning up.

If you still don't have a system, write back. We'll be on to the next thing..

All the best,
Ken N.
