Hi everyone,

For "back up only" purposes (for documents and software programs?) - what external HDs are you all recommending? What size and any particularly "great" brands? Prices? I've seen a few lately now that I am paying attention (tired of backing up to ZIPs or CDs) - but wonder what is most recommended here.

I admit that I don't back up enough but am starting to turn a new leaf. I do realize that if I lost "everything", my head would surely explode.

Anything is better than nothing, but lots of places sell external firewire drives, many with backup software on them.

Both Seagate and Maxtor sell a 'pushbutton solution', once the software's configured (I believe both come with Retrospect for Mac use) you push the button on the device and the backups run. They can also be scheduled to run unattended.

These are more expensive, <http://tinyurl.com/7r8ku> but quite convenient and we've even got one of out most technophobic professors using hers happily. If you go shopping, though be careful to specify the firewire version; they also sell USB 2.0 ones which, unless you buy a USB 2.0 card, will only run at USB 1.1 speeds, which is to say, glacially.

OWC <http://www.macsales.com> or SmallDog <http://www.smalldog.com> both sell external drives with varying amounts of software on them.

You can also just buy an external drive (or as I did, a drive from Fry's and an external case from Computer Geeks <http:// www.compgeeks.com> who also sell drives; both on sale, cost me $120 for a 200GB FW drive in the end) and either buy Retrospect or use software like RsyncX <http://archive.macosxlabs.org/rsyncx/ rsyncx.html> to do the backups.

This is the cheaper route, but requires more hands on work, though it can be set up to run automatically. RsyncX also has the advantage that it will run across a network, so of you have several machines, you can back them all up while the drive is attached to one of them.
