Basically "Open disk image, Drag application to your hard disk" is as
good as it gets. At that point you have two versions of Firefox.
There's no read-me info or instructions with the download to tell you
what is changed in the new version and what to do with your old
version and when. What about the related files? Trash only the app?
Will the plugins, bookmarks, settings and profile remain intact?
Apparently so, but why do we have to rely on blind faith and
automagical processes or trial and error without any reassurance?
It is a Mac, it will just work. I have been using the nightly builds of
Mozilla (Firefox's parent) downloading it about once a week.
Here is all you need to do:
Download the current version
quit Firefox
rename the old Firefox to something like Firefox 1.1
Open disk image, Drag application to your hard disk
open new Firefox and all your settings should be intact.
Once you are certain that the new Firefox works with no problems (in a
week or so) with all your favorite sites, you can trash the old one in
your applications folder.
I use this procedure because I was running the nightly builds, which
are in essence beta (if not alpha) versions and in those there are
frequently things that do not work just quite right. Nothing that would
lose data, but certain web sites might not work or display improperly,
or something got messed up in the printing subroutines or something
else annoying, but not fatal. So I would occasionally have to revert to
an older version for my day to day work.
